As social media addiction draws attention, YouTube has officially launched a timer feature for its short video service, Shorts, allowing users to set their own daily viewing time limit to help users avoid unconsciously wasting a whole day.
Personalized time management tool
According toTechCrunch website reportThis feature has been rolled out to all users. Users can set a daily Shorts viewing time limit in the app settings. When the set time is reached, a pop-up reminder will appear on the screen, suggesting that the user take a break. Although this pop-up window can be closed with a simple tap, it at least allows users to realize how much time they have spent watching various short videos in bed.
Parental controls are coming soon
Currently, this timer is not integrated with the parental control feature, but YouTube plans to add this feature next year. Parents or guardians will then be able to set a time limit for their children to watch Shorts, and the reminder window for children will not be easily closed, providing more effective management tools.
Digital health features continue to expand
This is not the first time YouTube has launched a digital health-related feature. Its platform has long provided a "rest reminder" setting that allows users to receive rest notifications at different time intervals, and also has a bedtime reminder function.
Social media addiction faces legal challenges
YouTube's strengthening of its digital health features at this time reflects the legal pressure faced by the entire social media industry.Bloomberg NewsThere are currently nearly 2000 lawsuits against social media companies, many of which accuse them of intentionally designing their platforms to be addictive.
As social awareness of digital addiction continues to grow, major platforms are being forced to find a new balance between user engagement and digital wellness. YouTube's move can be seen as a concrete industry response to these concerns. While the feature itself still relies on user self-control, it at least provides tools that allow users to better control their time.
