YouTubeAnnounceThe way of counting views of its short video service Shorts will be adjusted to include the number of times a short video starts playing or starts replaying. This is expected to take effect from the end of March this year.
Compared to the past when a video had to be played for more than a certain number of seconds to be counted as a single view, the total number of views of short videos will be higher after this adjustment. It will obviously follow the mainstream short video playback method such as TikTok and Instagram Reels, making it easier for creators to measure the viewing traffic performance on different platforms.
However, the adjustment to the playback calculation method will not affect the creators' profit sharing income or their eligibility for the YouTube Partner Program. Currently, creators still need to achieve more than 300 million views of Shorts short videos, or more than 3000 hours of total viewing time of YouTube public videos, plus more than 500 subscribers and upload at least 90 videos in the past 3 days to start YouTube monetization.
Currently, short video services including TikTok and Instagram Reels have publicly announced how they calculate the number of views and total viewing time. Although some details vary, most of them calculate the total number of views based on the number of consecutive short video starts or replays, thereby quantifying the level of attention paid to the short video content.
