Although its search engine market share is no longer what it once was, Yahoo doesn't seem to have given up on the opportunity to regain ground in the AI era, announcing the launch of a brand-new generative AI product.Yahoo Scout.
This new tool, officially defined as an "Answer Engine," is powered by Anthropic's Claude model. Currently available in beta, Yahoo Scout not only answers users' natural language questions but will also be deeply integrated into Yahoo's email, news, sports, and finance services.
More than just a search engine, it's an "answer engine."
Yahoo Scout operates similarly to Google's AI Overviews or Perplexity. When a user enters a question, Yahoo Scout doesn't just throw out a bunch of links; instead, it combines publicly available information from the internet with Yahoo's own vast content database to generate a complete answer.
Yahoo emphasizes that Yahoo Scout's answer interface will include interactive media, structured lists and tables, and will allow users to easily verify the accuracy of information through prominently marked source links, thus solving the trust issue of AI being prone to making unfounded statements.
The entire suite has been upgraded: finance, sports, and email all feature AI.
Beyond search, Yahoo Scout's technology will also permeate Yahoo's various vertical products, creating an "Intelligence Platform":
• Yahoo Finance:Yahoo Scout can automatically compile company financial reports, analyst ratings, and even provide real-time explanations of "why this stock went up/down today," making it quite useful for investors.
• Yahoo Mail (email address):It offers an AI-powered email summarization feature to help you quickly grasp the key points (similar to the Gemini app in Gmail).
• Yahoo Sports:Automatically generate event analysis and match data details.
• Yahoo Shopping:Provides shopping insights and suggestions, along with direct purchase links.
• Yahoo News:Automatically generate "key takeaways" for news articles.
Why choose Anthropic Claude?
It's worth noting that Yahoo didn't choose to collaborate with OpenAI (Microsoft's camp) or Google this time, but instead partnered with Anthropic. Given that the Claude model is known for its powerful logical reasoning capabilities and security, this may be a major consideration for Yahoo, which wants to provide more accurate and secure information.
Analysis of viewpoints
Seeing Yahoo launch AI search, many people might ask, "Is Yahoo still around?" In fact, Yahoo still maintains extremely high user engagement and traffic in specific vertical sectors (especially Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Sports).
This time, Yahoo chose a "group attack" strategy—instead of training a large model from scratch, it directly adopted the mature Claude model technology and combined it with its own exclusive content (financial data and sports news). The application of this technology, especially on Yahoo Finance, may be a pain point that Google or ChatGPT are currently finding difficult to penetrate.
However, Yahoo now faces the same challenge as Google: how to balance "providing answers" and "driving traffic"? If AI directly summarizes the key points of the news, will users still click on Yahoo News to read the full article? This will be a common dilemma for content providers in the AI era.
