Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun revealed that Xiaomi’s first electric car will aim to compete with Porsche and Tesla.Automotive Technology ConferenceIn the report, Xiaomi further revealed that its first electric car is indeed named SU7, and former BMW design director Chris Bangle serves as a consultant. Therefore, its appearance has some brand models, and it is available in three colors: blue, gray and green.
However, as previously stated, this event primarily focused on the vehicle's technical specifications, so the actual price was not announced. However, it is expected to enter mass production in the first half of next year, with sales to follow shortly thereafter. Previous reports indicate that Xiaomi's first electric car could be priced above RMB 30 (approximately NT$130 million).
In conjunction with the official announcement of the appearance and other details of Xiaomi's first electric car, Xiaomi also announced that the recently announced Xiaomi 14 series and Xiaomi Watch S3 will also include limited editions with the same color scheme as the vehicle, and are now available for sale in the Chinese market.
Xiaomi claims to have employed a cluster of die-casting equipment, more powerful than Tesla's, with a force of 9100 tons, to build its electric vehicles. Xiaomi also developed its own proprietary Titan alloy to enhance the vehicle's strength. The vehicle boasts a total glass area of 5.35 square meters, with the windshield and sunroof treated for sun protection and heat insulation. The rearview mirrors feature a frameless design, and the door handles are semi-hidden. The front and rear lights are also equipped with teardrop and halo-shaped headlights.
The vehicle measures 4997 x 1963 x 1440mm, with a wheelbase of 3000mm. Its drag coefficient is a mere Cd 0.195, and its front and rear cargo capacity is 105 liters and 517 liters, respectively. Depending on the model, a three-stage electric rear spoiler is also fitted to enhance driving stability. Not surprisingly, the "Mi" logo is also featured on the front of the vehicle.
In addition, Lei Jun also revealed that they have begun investing in the research and development of a V27200s motor system with a speed of up to 8 rpm, which is expected to be used in mass-produced models in 2025. As for the motor system with a speed of up to 35000 rpm, it has also passed laboratory tests, but it has not yet been confirmed whether it will be used in future mass-produced models.
In terms of safety, Xiaomi uses 7 layers of high-voltage insulation protection in the SU17's battery, along with a double-sided active cooling system with a heat dissipation area of 7.8m² and 165 sheets of aerogel for thermal insulation. Furthermore, 14 physical protection measures are implemented to prevent damage to the battery from external forces, and the battery cells are even designed to be inverted. This ensures the safety of those inside the vehicle to a certain extent in the event of an accidental release of energy from the battery.
To ensure normal operation even in cold environments, SU7 adopts three-heat source step-by-step heating technology and a high-efficiency dual-mode heat pump design, which can ensure that the vehicle maintains a high driving range in low-temperature environments while also maintaining normal battery charging.
As for the interior, the SU7 also uses a D-shaped steering wheel and sports-style seats made of Nappa leather. The internal audio system adopts 7.1.4 channels and supports Dolby Atmos specifications. It uses 5 screens as driving information display, vehicle functions and entertainment system user interface, including a 7.1-inch flip instrument panel and a 16.1-inch 3K resolution central control touch panel. It is run by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 processor and the operating system is Xiaomi Pengpai. The back seat is also equipped with two Xiaomi tablets for rear passengers to use.
The vehicle itself operates through two NVIDIA Drive Orin platforms with a computing power of up to 508 TOPS, and is equipped with a front lidar, 1 high-resolution cameras, 11 millimeter-wave radars, and 3 ultrasonic radars to ensure driving safety. It also emphasizes the use of its own developed image noise reduction technology to ensure the correct judgment of the system, allowing assisted driving to operate smoothly.
In terms of product ecosystem support, SU7 not only works with Xiaomi's mobile phones and tablets, but also allows products from the Mijia ecosystem to be used directly in the car. It even supports wireless CarPlay and AirPlay wireless projection technology, so the tablet used in the back seat can be replaced with an iPad.
