Just like Samsung launched a foldable phone this yearGalaxy foldAs a technological declaration, Xiaomi's launch of the Xiaomi MIX Alpha allows Xiaomi's MIX series models to return to the original intention of technological exploration, rather than just focusing on creating mobile phone products that are acceptable to everyone.
The newly launched Xiaomi MIX Alpha does not adopt the foldable screen design that Xiaomi has previously demonstrated. Instead, it adopts a flexible screen design that wraps around the body of the phone, making the entire phone almost a screen, with only a small area on the back for the camera.
Xiaomi's calculations indicate the Mi MIX Alpha's screen-to-body ratio will be as high as 180.6%. To achieve this design, Xiaomi employed a layered construction consisting of a display layer, touchscreen layer, and outer protective layer. However, the company did not disclose the phone's actual dimensions or screen resolution.
Since the screen surrounds the phone body, the body naturally uses a vibration motor to generate feedback touch as the power button and volume button functions, and adopts an under-screen fingerprint recognition design. The earpiece part is replaced by screen vibration sound technology, and functions such as proximity sensors are replaced by ultrasonic technology.
To further protect the screen, the Xiaomi MIX Alpha is constructed from a titanium alloy frame, enhanced with precision ceramic and sapphire glass for enhanced protection. Hardware specifications remain unchanged, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor and a Snapdragon 50X 5G chip. It comes with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, along with a 4050mAh battery that supports 40W wired fast charging.
As for the camera, it is equipped with a 1-megapixel performance sensor developed in cooperation with Samsung, paired with a 1/1.33-inch sensor and optical image stabilization design. It is also equipped with a 2000-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens and a 1200-megapixel depth of field lens, supporting a double optical zoom effect.
Xiaomi plans to launch this phone smoothly, with limited trial production expected to begin in November of this year, with sales expected to begin in China as early as the end of December. However, the suggested retail price is a hefty RMB 11 (approximately NT$12). Based on current conditions, this phone is unlikely to be released in Taiwan at this time.
