Elon Musk's AI company xAI has recently filed a registration application with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).Trademark called "MacroHard", the market speculates that it is a high-profile provocation to Microsoft.
The naming of "MacroHard" is highly topical, not only creating a stark contrast to Microsoft in terms of semantics but also carrying a strong ironic undertone. Literally translated, "Macro" implies grandeur and scale, while "Hard" contrasts with "Soft," potentially serving as an antonym for Microsoft. This suggests a potential rematch between Elon Musk and Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who have long been at odds.
In fact, Elon Musk has mentioned the name "MacroHard" several times on his social media platform "X." In one post, Elon Musk stated his plans to build a company focused on multi-agent AI systems, using his own large-scale language model, Grok, as its core technology. This would allow future AI to collaborate and specialize in areas like program development and video generation. At the end of the post, Elon Musk posed the question, "Can you guess the name of this company?" This further foreshadowed the name "MacroHard."
If "MacroHard" becomes a reality, it will differ from the typical AI applications currently available. Rather than simply being a voice assistant or chatbot, it will integrate multiple specialized AI agents to collaboratively complete more complex tasks. This not only demonstrates xAI's technological ambitions, but also signals Elon Musk's willingness to further challenge the current AI ecosystem dominated by Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI.
Elon Musk's feud with Microsoft has been ongoing for a long time. In addition to publicly criticizing Microsoft's pandemic response, Musk also expressed displeasure with Bill Gates' decision to purchase a Porsche Taycan electric car instead of a Tesla. Recently, there has been a significant disagreement with Microsoft's supporters over the direction and control of OpenAI. Elon Musk was originally a co-founder of OpenAI, but withdrew due to ideological differences. In 2023, he founded xAI, an artificial intelligence company, aiming to build AI technology that is "more transparent and safe for humans."
Meanwhile, xAI's Grok has been integrated into the "X" platform as one of the social media's intelligent assistants. If the "MacroHard" project is officially launched in the future, further expansion of its applications within the "X" platform ecosystem is possible, creating a comprehensive platform that combines AI assistants, content generation, and development collaboration.
xAI has yet to provide further explanation regarding the "MacroHard" trademark, but judging by Elon Musk's past style of "laying the groundwork first, then announcing the big move," this AI war, sparked by semantic provocation, is likely just the beginning.
