Western Digital announced the acquisition of SanDisk in 2015 and incorporated the SanDisk brand into the Western Digital system in 2020. At that time, it also consolidated and adjusted the brand product line.
However, because each brand has different user groups, Western Digital has decided to split the SanDisk brand from its own system again, allowing it to focus more on flash storage products, while the Western Digital brand can focus more resources on its hard drive storage business layout.
Details of the split will not be revealed until Western Digital's upcoming investor day, but it is expected that SanDisk's previously promoted SSD products will return. However, whether these will be merged with Western Digital's existing WD_BLACK and other SSD product lines remains unconfirmed.
