Following the previousSandiskFollowing its split and the launch of a new brand identity, Western Digital announced at Innovation Day 2026 that it will reposition itself under the new brand "WD," transforming from a traditional hard drive manufacturer into a "storage infrastructure partner for the AI-driven data economy."
To prove that this is not just empty talk, WD unveiled a hard drive product roadmap ranging from 40TB to over 100TB, and showcased several cutting-edge technologies optimized for AI workloads, attempting to redefine the economics of storage between SSDs and HDDs.
Capacity Soars: 40TB ePMR Samples Delivered, HAMR Aiming for 100TB Capacity
There can never be too much data generated during AI training. WD has now established a dual-track technical strategy of ePMR (energy-assisted magnetic recording) and HAMR (thermal-assisted magnetic recording).
• At present:The world's highest capacity 40TB UltraSMR ePMR HDD has entered the customer verification stage (mainly targeting two major hyperscale cloud providers) and is expected to be officially mass-produced in the second half of 2026.
• Next stage:HAMR hard drives are currently undergoing validation with customers and are expected to enter the mass production ramp-up phase in 2027.
• Future outlook:WD plans to push ePMR technology to 60TB without increasing power consumption; while HAMR technology is expected to break the 100TB mark in 2029.
The advantage of this dual-track strategy is that it gives customers "choice." ePMR and HAMR share the same architecture, allowing enterprises to choose technologies according to their own upgrade pace without being forced to undergo a fragmented architecture transformation.
Performance Revolution: Dual-Pivot Design Doubles HDD Speed
The biggest criticism of traditional HDDs is their slow speed (especially IOPS). To narrow the performance gap with SSDs, WD has introduced two killer technologies:
• High-bandwidth hard drive technology:By using multiple magnetic heads and multiple magnetic tracks for simultaneous reading and writing, the bandwidth is directly doubled (2 times), and can even be expanded to 8 times in the future.
• Dual Pivot Design:By inserting a second independently operating actuator into the 3.5-inch hard drive, sequential I/O performance is improved by 2 times.
WD claims that the combination of these two technologies can improve the overall sequential I/O performance of HDDs by up to 4 times, and maintain sufficient I/O speeds even when the capacity increases to 100TB, reducing customers' reliance on expensive SSDs.
Power consumption optimization and platform strategy
For AI-generated warm/cold data that is "cold but occasionally requires millisecond-level access," WD has launched a power-optimized HDD that reduces power consumption by 20%, with validation expected in 2027. In addition, WD will also provide an open API-based intelligent software layer for mid-sized enterprises with data volumes exceeding 200PB, allowing them to enjoy storage efficiency comparable to hyperscale cloud providers, with a launch expected in 2027.
