Waymo has been granted permission to significantly expand its testing in California, covering the entire Bay Area and from Sacramento to the Southern California-Mexico border.
The next stop is San Diego, with passenger service expected in mid-2026. Simultaneously, plans are underway to expand to multiple cities in Las Vegas, Detroit, and Texas.

Alphabet's self-driving car technology company, Waymo, announced a major breakthrough, confirming that it has obtained approval from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).ApproveThis will significantly expand its driverless testing and Robotaxi (autonomous taxi) deployment.

Waymo has been granted permission to significantly expand its testing in California, covering the entire Bay Area and from Sacramento to the Southern California-Mexico border.

According to the map information released by Waymo, the approved operating area is quite large, no longer limited to downtown San Francisco or parts of Los Angeles, but extending to the entire San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, and most of Southern California, even reaching as far south as the Mexican border.

Approved for "fully autonomous driving" to traverse more areas of Golden State

In an official statement, Waymo said, "We have been officially authorized to conduct fully autonomous driving in more areas of the Golden State (California)."

Maps provided by the California Department of Motor Vehicles show that the dark areas represent Waymo's original operating areas, while the light areas represent the newly added expansion areas. This means that Waymo's driverless cars will be able to connect a wider range of cities and suburbs, enabling not only short-distance connections in city centers but also long-distance travel across counties in the future.

On Reddit, many users have pointed out that with its service now covering areas like Napa and Sonoma, Waymo Robotaxi is likely to become a popular transportation option for wine country tourists, allowing them to enjoy wine tastings without worrying about driving.

In mid-2026, they will enter San Diego, accelerating their expansion across the United States.

While Waymo has not yet announced a precise timeline for fully opening its services in the newly approved areas, the company has made it clear that the "next stop" for its California expansion plan will be San Diego, where it is expected to officially offer rides to the public in mid-2026.

In addition to its California home base, Waymo's nationwide expansion plan is proceeding at a rapid pace. The company has officially confirmed plans to expand into Las Vegas (including the Strip and airport area) and Detroit by 2026.
