Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving car technology company, continues its expansion, recently confirming that it has extended the testing of its self-driving car fleet to four new cities in the eastern and midwestern United States, including Philadelphia, Baltimore, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh. It also confirmed a partnership with Moove, with plans to launch an autonomous taxi service in London, UK, in 2026.
Initial testing will be conducted with manual monitoring to pave the way for fully autonomous driving.
Waymo says testing is already underway in Philadelphia, with trials soon to begin in three other cities. However, the current testing approach remains relatively conservative, with a human safety driver accompanying the vehicle for monitoring.
The main task at this stage is to collect road data and verify the system's performance in different urban environments. After further verification, the plan will gradually transition to a fully autonomous driving phase, similar to the recent operation in Miami, with official service expected in five new cities, including Texas and Florida, by 2026.
Waymo currently provides ride-hailing services in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta, Austin, and the San Francisco Bay Area, and recently announced that cities including San Diego, Las Vegas, and Detroit will also be added to its operating lineup.
New York City testing had a short-term permit, but regulations remain a challenge.
In the nationwide expansion plan, New York City is clearly the most iconic but also the most challenging battleground.
Although New York State law currently prohibits self-driving vehicles from operating on public roads, Waymo received a temporary permit in August to conduct tests in parts of downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn (until late September). This was the first time New York City had issued a "test deployment" permit for a self-driving car, indicating a loosening of regulatory attitudes. However, achieving fully automated robotaxi service in densely populated New York is still a long way off.
Partnering with Moove to expand into London and begin international expansion
In addition to its deep roots in the United States, Waymo's development strategy has also expanded to overseas markets.
Waymo has confirmed its partnership with Moove and will launch in 2026.London, EnglandThe launch of its self-driving taxi service will be a major milestone for Waymo as it expands beyond the U.S. market for the first time.
Although the UK currently bans fully driverless vehicles, with the advancement of new regulations, a government-approved pilot program for autonomous taxis is expected to launch next spring, which is anticipated to open the door for Waymo's international expansion.
