Recently obtainedGeneral Motors, Ford, Rivian and other US automakersThe North American Charging Standard (NACS) adopted by the company is currently also adopted by the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo. It is expected that electric vehicles launched in the US, Canadian and Mexican markets will adopt the North American charging standard design.
Volvo said it expects that starting in the first half of 2024, models launched in the US, Canada and Mexico markets will support the North American charging standard. Among them, the C40 Recharge, EX30 and EX90 models will use it through an adapter, while models launched after 2025 will directly adopt the North American charging standard specifications.
Adopting the North American charging standard means that Volvo models will be able to directly use Tesla's more than 12000 fast charging stations in the US market, and will also be able to find the location of charging stations through the Volvo vehicle app.
Volvo has also become the first European automaker to adopt the North American charging standard, and may attract more European automakers to adopt this charging standard in the future.
Currently, the Stellantis Group, which owns vehicle brands such as Chrysler, Alfa Romeo, and Fiat, and the Hyundai Group are also evaluating the design of North American charging standards. The reason is that Hyundai and other automakers use the 800V charging specification with faster charging efficiency, so they may require Tesla to upgrade its charging station specifications.
However, considering that setting up and maintaining charging stations by oneself must incur certain costs, adopting the North American charging standard will directly use Tesla's abundant charging station resources, which will obviously still be a considerable incentive.
