As the market continues to expand edge computing application services, VMware also announced at VMware Explore 2023 that it will strengthen the development of software-defined edge computing deployments, making it easier for enterprises to build and manage various edge computing application services.
The VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator, formerly known as VMware SASE Orchestrator, announced this time, will be built on the foundations of VMware Edge Compute Stack edge computing orchestration, VMware Software-Defined Access, VMware SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Network) and other projects. It will be combined with artificial intelligence operation processes corresponding to edge computing to provide operational features such as security, automatic adjustment, visualization and self-healing, as well as a one-stop management console interface, allowing enterprises to more conveniently implement large-scale edge computing application service deployment and management needs.
Among them, the VMware Edge Compute Stack function is based on Project Keswick proposed last year, allowing enterprises to execute and manage various edge computing automation operations through orchestration, and is compatible with various new and old application services, and dynamically adjusts hardware computing resources, thereby reducing the cost of building and managing edge computing combined with modern application services.
Such applications will be able to meet requirements such as automated production, improved production line safety, and flexible scheduling in manufacturing scenarios, or be used in retail channels for fast checkout and product management. They will also enable more efficient energy management and avoid operational interruptions. Medical applications can include body-related data management, real-time care, and even enable robots to perform more accurate surgeries.
For example, Audi has established automated operations through scalable edge infrastructure in its factories around the world. This approach uses edge computing to replace the use of PCs and other hardware devices between production lines, improving factory uptime, operational agility, and the speed of implementing new application services and tool resources on the production line. This is achieved by using VMware Edge Compute Stack and VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator to implement a distributed edge infrastructure in a scalable manner, thereby improving resource management efficiency and reducing operating costs.
VMware also announced that its VMware Private Mobile Network, a managed connectivity service deployment for edge digital transformation, will launch in the third quarter of VMware's fiscal year 2024. This will reduce the complexity of building 4G or 5G private mobile networks. Wireless network access service providers such as Betacom, Boingo Wireless, and Federated Wireless will become the first wave of testing partners for VMware Private Mobile Network.
