In an earlier announcement, Tesla confirmed that it will build a new energy storage super factory (Megafactory) in Shanghai in the second half of this year, and is expected to produce Megapack battery products locally in China.
This energy storage super factory will be located in Lingang, Shanghai, and the signing ceremony was completed on April 4th at the Shanghai Lingang New Area Management Committee, and witnessed by Zhu Xiaotong, who was recently promoted to Senior Vice President of Tesla's automotive business, Wang Hao, General Manager of Tesla China, and Tao Lin, Vice President of Global External Relations of Tesla.
This factory will become Tesla's second energy storage super factory, with an estimated annual production capacity of 1 Megapack batteries, with a total power output of up to 40 gigawatt-hours (GWh). The first energy storage super factory is located in California, USA, and is also Tesla's only energy storage super factory currently in production.
Tesla's current Megapack batteries use lithium-iron batteries developed by CATL. They are primarily used for energy storage and discharge. They can serve as an emergency power supply system at home and, when necessary, can also reverse to maintain stable operation of the public power grid.
Each Megapack battery unit can store more than 300 million watt-hours (Wh) of electricity, which is enough to meet the electricity needs of approximately 3600 households for about one hour.
