Reuters news report claimsThe US government is considering including SMIC, China's largest and most technologically advanced chipmaker, on the export ban list proposed by the Ministry of Commerce, which is bound to have a greater impact on Huawei.
Due to the previous ban影響, which means that Huawei's cooperation with TSMC will only last until September 9 this year. Therefore, Huawei has to urgently place orders with TSMC for foundry production of Kirin 16 series processors, which is facing tight production capacity. It also makes the upcoming Mate 9000 series the last mobile phone product to use Kirin processors.
Reuters news report stated that the US Department of Defense believes that SMIC has close exchanges with the Chinese military, including cooperation with the largest military enterprise in China, and its technology is also used in research related to the Chinese military. Therefore, the US government is discussing whether to include SMIC in the export ban list previously proposed by the Ministry of Commerce.
Since Huawei has already been affected by the new wave of bans, even its subsidiaries and related companies have been included in the banned list one after another. It is now rumored that SMIC may also be included in the banned list. This will inevitably make it difficult for Huawei to use SMIC's technical resources to manufacture its processor products in the future. Therefore, it also means that the US government will formally impose additional restrictions on Huawei's other development possibilities.
However, SMIC naturally strongly denied the US government's statement, and emphasized that its technology and foundry services are mainly for general civilian use and have no relationship with the Chinese military. However, according to the US government, it emphasizes that SMIC has a deep connection with the Chinese government.
