Unity recently launched a new billing methodcause confusionAfter the apology, Marc Whitten, president of Unity Creative Solutions,Explain the adjustment methodThe Unity Personal plan for personal use will remain free, and the previously announced practice of charging based on the number of game installations will charge for content developed using the Unity LTS (Long-Term Technical Support) version starting in 2024. If developers still continue to use earlier versions to make games, they will not be charged under the new plan.
In addition, the new billing method can be calculated based on 2.5% of the game's total sales or the number of new game installs per month. At the same time, these data will be calculated by the developer and not determined by Unity. The emphasis is on billing the lowest amount, thereby achieving a mutually beneficial relationship with the developer's revenue. Game developers who have created content with Unity and whose revenue in the past year is less than $100 million do not currently have to pay the fee.
As for the Unity Personal plan, which will remain free, Marc Whitten also explained that the criteria will be adjusted from revenue of less than US$1 (approximately NT$10 million) in the past year to less than US$300 (approximately NT$20 million), which means that test content and experimental projects created through Unity will not face additional charges.
At the same time, Unity has also removed the requirement to add "Made with Unity" to the startup screen for the Unity Personal plan.
At this stage, it is impossible to confirm developers' reactions and opinions on Unity's adjustments, but Unity has clearly made concessions.
