Unity earlier announced a $44 billionAcquired software company IronSource, seemingly planning to use this to strengthen the in-game advertising application function, but this has obviously caused dissatisfaction among many developers, and some even threatened to switch to other game engines.
The reason is that IronSource's most impressive work in the past was ad-hosting software. For example, it previously disguised the software as an extension package, so that after users downloaded and installed it, a large number of pop-up ads and banner ads would pop up, or toolbars would be forced to be installed in the browser, which caused trouble for most users.
Unity announced the acquisition of IronSource this time. Although it is said that the purpose is to make it easier for developers to insert advertisements into games, such as adding various advertising content to game content on smartphone platforms or online multiplayer game content to increase additional profits, it is obvious that IronSource's reputation is not acceptable to most developers. It may even cause a large number of developers to leave because of this transaction.
However, judging from Unity's recent development, the development and update speed of most games has slowed down due to the impact of the epidemic, which has led to a decrease in Unity's revenue due to the slowdown in game sales growth. At the same time, its stock price has also declined, causing Unity to announce layoffs a few days ago to balance operating costs.
Therefore, Unity's acquisition of IronSource may be intended to increase revenue opportunities, which may include collecting commissions from advertising content exposure or increasing profits through tool resources. However, if this causes more developers to choose to leave, it will obviously create a clearly disadvantageous situation.
However, Unity seems to remain optimistic about this and believes that it will not have much impact.
