The UK government is investing £2.25 million to build Isambard-AI, the most powerful supercomputer ever built

Isambard-AI is named after Isambard Brunel, a renowned British engineer from the early 19th century. His achievements include building the first tunnel under the Thames and designing the SS Great Britain, Britain's first propeller-driven ocean-going vessel. In 1843, it became the largest ship ever launched and operated. He even proposed the idea of designing steam-powered ships to sail to North America, and he also promoted numerous public transport and modernization projects in the UK.

And Isambard-AIWill be built by HPEIt will be composed of 5448 sets of NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hoper Superchips, and is expected to achieve a computing power of up to 21EFLOPS, thereby regulating the development of artificial intelligence computing.

According to the University of Bristol, Isambard-AI will be faster than the fastest supercomputer currently in the UK.Isambard 3Ten times faster, it is expected to be housed in the self-contained cooling systems data centre at the Nationl Composites Centre in Bristol.

This supercomputer is expected to provide computing resources for fields such as robotics, data analysis, drug research, and climate change, and will currently focus on analytical research in the fields of advanced materials and advanced production technologies.

As for the previously announced Isambard 3, it is also placed in the UK National Composites Centre. It is composed of 384 sets of Grace CPU Superchips and is also built by HPE. It can provide 64 PTFLOPS peak computing power in FP2.7 double-precision floating-point operations and only requires 270kW of power consumption to operate, making it one of the most energy-efficient supercomputers currently available. It is expected to be officially launched in 2024.
