Amid increasingly fierce competition in the global electric vehicle industry, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi recently praised the pace of Chinese automakers' electric vehicle development on the podcast "People by WTF." He believes that Chinese electric vehicle brands are already at the forefront of the world in terms of innovation speed, cost control, and overall quality performance, and have even formed a "replicable path" that can be used as a model for global mobile service platforms.
Dara Khosrowshahi stated that there are currently over 100 electric vehicle manufacturers competing in China. Local policy support and a highly competitive market environment have significantly driven automakers to continuously and rapidly iterate their vehicle products. He described this as a "bottom-up competition model," which not only stimulates technological advancement but also makes it difficult for Western automakers to keep up.
The market believes that Dara Khosrowshahi's evaluation is not groundless, and Uber itself is actively promoting the full electrification of its fleet.
In July this year, Uber announcedLucidUber is investing $3 million to use its Gravity model for self-driving car booking services.Continued expansion, extending from Phoenix, Arizona, all the way to Austin and Atlanta, and recently obtained permission to conduct self-driving car tests in New York.
Dara Khosrowshahi pointed out that the experience behind Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers' ability to stand out in such a competitive market is worthy of reference for other countries. He further emphasized that this competitive model centered on speed, cost, and quality has not only driven the growth of the automakers themselves, but also provided a clear direction for the electrification transformation of global travel platforms.
For Uber, this perspective holds strategic implications. As shared mobility and autonomous driving gradually enter numerous markets, electric vehicles will become the cornerstone of platform operations. The development model of the Chinese market may offer valuable lessons for Uber's global push into electrification.
From another perspective, Dara Khosrowshahi's statement also once again highlights the influence of China's electric vehicle industry in the global market. From BYD to NIO, Xpeng, and numerous emerging brands, these automakers are accelerating the reshaping of the global automotive industry through price competition and technological iteration.
