Uber earlier announced that it will test a ride-hailing service called "uberPET" in the United States, which will make it easier for users to find service drivers who are willing to allow their pets to travel with them.
Since not all Uber drivers are willing to allow users' cats, dogs, or other pets to travel with them, the "uberPET" service will allow users to pay an additional fee to attract drivers who are willing to accept orders and provide ride services. Drivers who don't mind pets traveling with them can also check "uberPET" in the service options to increase their income opportunities.
According to Uber, aside from a possible $3-5 surcharge (depending on the city), other usage patterns are largely the same as regular uberX. Pets like dogs and cats generally don't need to be carried in a pet carrier, but certain pets like birds and fish are recommended to be carried in cages or fish tanks.
There is no specific limit on the number of pets a user can bring with them at the same time. This is entirely up to the driver providing the vehicle ride. If a pet urinates or defecates in the vehicle, or damages items on the vehicle, the user must compensate the driver accordingly. However, this does not apply to pet hair loss.
In fact, Uber has provided this service outside the United States a long time ago. For example, Singapore started providing it as early as 2017, and this service is also available in Brazil, Mexico and other regions. This time it was brought back to the United States for use, obviously because it saw that many people had such needs.
In terms of the overall user experience, this design will prevent users from having to cancel their Uber ride after requesting a ride only to have the driver refuse to allow their pet. By adding the "uberPET" option, the company can better meet the needs of more users and allow drivers willing to provide the service to receive a small additional fee.
The service is expected to be available in Austin, Denver, Nashville, the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Tampa Bay in the United States starting October 16. Users will be able to find this service option directly in the updated Uber app.
After clicking on the "uberPET" service, the system will also calculate the distance, related fees, and estimated arrival time based on the user's travel needs, allowing users to travel more conveniently with their pets.
However, it should be noted that the "uberPET" service does not include insurance for pets. Currently, the insurance provided by Uber services is mainly designed for users only.
