Uber AnnounceUber's robotaxi service, developed in partnership with electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid and autonomous driving technology company Nuro, is expected to launch in the Bay Area in 2026. This marks a significant step for Uber in scaling its Level 4 autonomous driving service through diverse partnerships, following the sale of its Autopilot Group (ATG) in 2020.
Lucid Gravity is powered by Nuro Driver and exclusively operated by Uber.
Back in July, Uber announced this tripartite partnership, revealing that it would deploy at least 20,000 Lucid electric vehicles powered by Nuro, and that Uber had also invested in both Nuro and Lucid.
The announced details confirm that the service will use Lucid Gravity SUVs as its vehicle platform and will be equipped with the Nuro Driver Level 4 autonomous driving system. In the future, the service will be exclusively available through the Uber app.
Ahead of its official launch in 2026, Uber stated that Lucid and Nuro are assisting in building an "Engineering Test Fleet" of over 100 Robotaxi vehicles for safety testing. Uber noted that "Nuro will lead the development and validation of comprehensive safety cases covering dozens of categories," including simulations, closed-course testing, and supervised road testing.

Actively forge alliances to expand the self-driving travel landscape.
Since selling its self-driving car fleet (ATG) in 2020, Uber has been actively transforming into a platform integrator. In 2025 alone, Uber announced the launch of Waymo services in Austin and Atlanta, its alliance with Momenta (a self-driving car startup) in Europe, and its partnership with Volkswagen to launch the ID.Buzz self-driving car.
This collaboration with Lucid and Nuro is clearly a more in-depth and "serious investment" among Uber's many alliance deals.
In a press release, Uber's Chief Product Officer, Sachin Kansal, stated, "The Bay Area has long been a birthplace of transformative technologies, and by combining expertise in electric vehicles, autonomous driving, and ride-hailing services, we are laying the foundation for large-scale self-driving services in the Bay Area and beyond."
