Uber Eats announced a partnership with circular economy consulting firm REnato lab to jointly launch "Sustainable Packaging Guidelines" for local businesses in Taiwan to promote sustainable food delivery services.
Following the launch of the "Green Sustainable Delivery Program" for delivery partners, Uber Eats has partnered with circular economy consultancy firm REnato lab to develop the "Uber Eats Sustainable Packaging Guidelines" that comply with international and local environmental standards, as well as the needs of local merchant partners. Uber Eats will continue to work with industry partners, Uber Eats merchant partners, and platform consumers to improve the delivery industry's net zero carbon emissions.
Uber Eats plans to achieve zero-emission vehicle usage in its global operating markets by 2040 and will achieve the goal of fully using environmentally friendly packaging materials by 2030.
Karthik Vasudevan, Acting General Manager of Uber Eats Taiwan, said, "Uber Eats aspires to become a benchmark brand in the food delivery industry's sustainable transformation. Across our global operations, we are leveraging three key strategies to contribute to environmental sustainability: promoting electric scooter delivery, eliminating single-use plastic packaging, and promoting reusable packaging. Developing environmental sustainability presents numerous practical challenges, requiring collaboration between relevant experts across multiple disciplines and government agencies. Therefore, we are honored to partner with REnato lab to provide additional support, from the definition and promotion of basic reusable packaging materials to the implementation of testing and tracking in restaurant operations."
REnato lab CEO Ouyang Aining said, "We understand that many companies are actively developing sustainability initiatives, while others are still exploring their path forward. To achieve long-term sustainability, we must design products and services with a humanistic perspective. Simply put, this means making sustainable products and services part of everyone's lives. This is why we are particularly excited about collaborating with Uber Eats. By sharing our practical experience in the circular economy and incorporating Uber Eats' insights into consumer trends, REnato lab hopes to design behavioral changes that are accessible and actionable in everyday life."
Uber Eats and REnato lab will jointly develop sustainable packaging guidelines that meet international standards based on global environmental packaging trends, Taiwanese regulations, and local usage scenarios. The guidelines are expected to be launched in late June of this year, and will be promoted to platform merchant partners to develop a medium- to long-term transformation plan.
In addition to sustainable packaging materials, Uber Eats is also committed to driving the green transformation of the food delivery industry. For example, in order to achieve its zero waste goal, Uber Eats uses environmentally friendly paper bags that have passed the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) label for delivery, and has set the app to not actively provide disposable tableware.
In terms of zero carbon emissions, nearly 20% of Uber Eats' delivery trips in Taiwan are currently completed by green vehicles. The company has set a goal of doubling the green miles completed on the Uber Eats platform to 2025% by 40, thereby continuing to work with the industry to create a sustainable city.
