Last NovemberAnnounces acquisition of Crown Taxi Fleet, a local Taiwanese taxi fleetFollowing this, Uber announced today (February 5th) that the acquisition has successfully passed the review of the Fair Trade Commission and the Investment Commission of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the transaction was officially completed recently. This not only symbolizes that the relationship between Uber and Taiwan's local taxi industry has been upgraded from "cooperation" to "merger", but also demonstrates Uber's long-term commitment to cultivating the Taiwan market.
From partners to family
In fact, Crown Cruises has a long-standing relationship with Uber. As early as 2020, Crown Cruises joined the Uber platform, providing dispatch services for its professional drivers and shared taxis through the Uber App.
Cesar Molina, General Manager of Uber Taiwan, stated that the two companies have collaborated for many years, and this acquisition will further demonstrate how the Uber App deeply integrates its "technology platform" with "traditional fleet resources." Following the merger, Uber hopes to maintain the high-quality service that passengers trust in a smoother and more efficient manner.
By bringing in global resources, we are targeting "social concern" and "rural development".
In addition to strengthening its existing ride-hailing service, this acquisition by Uber also carries a strong sense of "localization" strategy.
Cesar Molina emphasized that Uber will more effectively leverage its global resources and technology in the future, and actively participate in government-driven social welfare projects. Specifically, Uber will focus on the following areas:
• Special services for specific groups:Promote services such as elderly pick-up and drop-off and travel-friendly facilities for pregnant women.
• Service Expansion:With the support of advanced technology, Uber's innovative technology will be extended to more areas with demand (not limited to metropolitan areas), increasing the diversity of travel options for people in Taiwan.
Analysis of viewpoints
The completion of this merger is a significant milestone for Taiwan's ride-hailing market.
In the past, Uber has experienced regulatory challenges and operational model adjustments in Taiwan. From early clashes with the system to later collaborations with taxi fleets to launch "Uber Taxi," each step demonstrates Uber's efforts to "comply with regulations" and "expand its capacity."
The acquisition of the Crown Fleet signifies that Uber is no longer merely an "information platform" matching passengers and drivers, but rather effectively owns the management and operation rights of the fleet. This has two advantages for Uber:
• Greater control over transportation capacity:It allows for more direct dispatch and management of vehicles, solving the pain point of not being able to hail a ride during peak hours.
• Deeper local connections:By participating in government projects such as long-term care and transportation for pregnant women, Uber is actively shedding its image as a "foreign company that just comes to make money" and instead emphasizing its contributions and responsibilities to Taiwanese society.
For consumers, who owns the fleet may not be important; what matters is how user-friendly the app is and how quickly the vehicles arrive. With the formal integration of the two systems and resources, further improvements in dispatch efficiency and service quality are expected in the future.
