After the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling, TikTok can only choose to resell to businesses within the United States or face being banned in the United States.
However, previous news indicated that the Biden administration would not implement any ban on TikTok before the end of its term, but would hand it over to the incoming Trump administration. But related news also pointed out that TikTok intends toChoose to shut down its service yourself, and allow users to download and retain personal uploaded content.
Trump on his online social media platformTRUTHSocialThe statement said that the Supreme Court's rulingNo surpriseBut he also expressed respect for it. Trump also stated that he will make a decision on the future of TikTok, but it still takes some time to confirm.
The Washington Post reported that Trump is considering an executive order that would give TikTok an additional 60 or 90 days to comply with regulations. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding TikTok's future, but concluded that a ban on the app wouldn't violate the U.S. Constitution, given the potential impact of its services.
However, free speech groups condemned the Supreme Court's decision. For example, Patrick Toomey, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union's National Security Project, expressed disappointment in a statement, believing that the US government's ban on TikTok based on intimidation and speculation affects freedom of speech. The Supreme Court also gave the government executive branch unprecedented power to suppress speech it dislikes, which is tantamount to using national security as an excuse to affect the people's constitutional right to speech.
TikTok currently has about 1.7 million users in the United States. As TikTok is about to be banned in the United States, many people have begun to turn to another equally popular Chinese app, REDnote, and expressed their dissatisfaction through #tiktokrefugee.
