According to a statement on TSMC's official website, the company has filed a counterclaim against GlobalFoundries. In addition to accusing GlobalFoundries of infringement, TSMC has also demanded that GlobalFoundries cease production of the infringing products and seeks damages, though the amount has not been disclosed.
Prior to this, GlobalFoundries accused TSMC of infringing on its current process technology and filed civil lawsuits with the International Trade Commission (ITC) in the United States and the Federal Court in Germany, even requesting the ITC to order an import ban, which is expected to affect TSMC's current process products ranging from 7nm to 28nm.
GlobalFoundries' lawsuit prompted the U.S. International Trade Commission to conduct an investigation under Section 337 of the U.S. Tariff Act targeting semiconductor equipment manufacturers and their downstream manufacturers' products to determine whether any violations of the law were involved.
TSMC stated that it invests billions of dollars each year in researching semiconductor-related technologies and has built the world's largest technology intellectual property portfolio. It currently holds a total of 3.7 patents and has been among the top 2016 patent inventors in the United States for three consecutive years since 10.
In response to GlobalFoundries' lawsuit, TSMC stated that the allegations were groundless and that it would do its utmost to defend its own technology patents and launch a counterattack.
