At the same time, two new concept electric vehicles were also announced, one of which is the Urban SUV that will soon be mass-produced, and the other is the Sport Crossover that is expected to be launched in the European market in 2025.
The Urban SUV, expected to launch in Europe in 2024, will be available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and will be offered in two battery configurations, including one with a longer range. While details are still limited for the Sport Crossover, expected to launch in 2025, it is expected to feature a more sporty styling than traditional SUVs.
Toyota also plans to release its next-generation battery after 2026, which is expected to offer higher charge and discharge efficiency and a further 20% reduction in manufacturing costs, making electric vehicles more affordable and easier to incorporate into vehicle designs. Toyota also plans to develop lithium iron phosphate batteries with a longer range and a 40% reduction in cost, hoping to significantly boost the electric vehicle market.
Another new battery built with a high-nickel cathode and bipolar technology is expected to significantly increase driving range while also reducing manufacturing costs, but there is currently no clear launch schedule.
When explaining the company's progress in solid-state battery development, Toyota Europe Vice President Andrea Carlucci emphasized that the company has made technological breakthroughs and overcome the durability issues of solid-state batteries, but it still takes 3-4 years to develop mass production technology. It is expected to be put into commercial use between 2027 and 2028, and will be able to charge from 10% to 10% in 80 minutes, and can be used in tens of thousands of electric vehicles.
