Toyota announced at its CES 2025 pre-show event that its smart city, "Woven City," will begin its first phase this fall with approximately 100 residents.
The "Woven City" project was proposed at CES 2020. Toyota plans to build a smart city based on the former site of the Higashi-Fuji Factory, which is located in Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture, near Mount Fuji and covers an area of approximately 5 square meters. The project will incorporate Toyota's smart driving, robotics and other conceptual technologies, and related projects will begin in 2021.
The first phase of the "Woven City" project has been completed and has obtained the highest level of platinum certification for US green buildings. It is expected to open this fall and welcome approximately 100 residents.
The roads within Woven City are broadly divided into three types: those for autonomous vehicles, personal mobility devices, and pedestrians. Robots and drones will also be introduced to ensure the safety of residents or provide companionship and assistance.
The logistics and freight system within the smart city is operated in an automated underground transport format. The city's basic electricity is generated through hydrogen fuel. The company is also collaborating with companies such as ENEOS, NTT, and Rinnai on technology to provide basic energy and communication capabilities within the city.
At this stage, it is expected that about 100 residents will move in, mainly Toyota employees and their relatives, but in the future, 360 more creators, inventors and other residents will be invited to move in. After the second phase of the project is completed, the number of residents is expected to increase to 2000.
