Aalto University in Finland is expected to be on January 2025, 1Online, publicly exhibitedNokia's past mobile phone product design archives, allowing people to relive the development of the mobile phone industry that Nokia once drove.
In 1998, Nokia became the world's most well-known mobile phone brand, with a market share of 40%, including 70% in the UK. Between 1998 and 2007, it contributed about a quarter of Finland's economic growth.
In addition to becoming a representative brand in the mobile phone market at the time, design also became the distinctive feature of Nokia brand models at the time. Different product positionings were differentiated by design language, and more user-friendly operation interfaces were added. In addition, the Nordic design aesthetic attracted the attention of the market consumer population.
For example, Nokia phones feature buttons designed for easy one-handed use, a curved surface that fits the fingers, and became the first mobile phone brand to support text messaging. The subsequent Nokia 3210 even boasted that users could change the shell to suit different usage styles, thereby attracting more support from young users.
Nokia's classic ringtone, "1011 Gran Vals," first used by the Nokia 1902, originated in 1993 when then-Nokia Executive Vice President Anssi Vanjoki introduced the 19th-century Spanish musician Francisco Tárrega's guitar work "Gran Vals" to his colleague Lauri Kivinen. He then extracted a section of the tune, which later became the familiar "Nokia tune." This ringtone has since been incorporated into numerous other works, including the film "The Big Bill," where it was used as a keynote. Nokia phones have also appeared in numerous films.
However, Nokia failed to sustain its growth in the smartphone market, driven significantly by Apple. After being sold to Microsoft, Nokia continued to expand its presence in the mobile phone market under the Lumia brand, but it failed to compete with Apple and Google, ultimately fading from the market. Currently, Nokia only licenses the brand to HMD for continued mobile phone production, but this has little direct connection to its past glory.
