Variety website reportedSony Pictures Entertainment announced at the recent CinemaCon that it is developing an "R-rated" animated film based on the classic hardcore action game Bloodborne. Sony executives assured that the animation will "very faithfully" recreate the game's bloody, violent, and dark gothic essence.
This news not only excited countless "hunters" (i.e. gamers) around the world, but also shows Sony's strong ambition to continue accelerating the monetization of its PlayStation exclusive IPs into a cross-media entertainment empire.
Adhering to R-rated standards: Authentically presenting Cthulhu and physical horror.
Released in 2015 by the renowned Japanese developer FromSoftware, Bloodborne is known for its extremely hardcore combat system, obscure and fragmented narrative, and a dark world view deeply inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos of HP Lovecraft. The game is filled with splattered blood, mutated beast-like patients, and various chilling physical horror elements, which earned the game unprecedented acclaim and reviews on the PlayStation platform.
Sony Pictures explicitly stated at CinemaCon that the animated film will be rated "R" (restricted) and promised to remain absolutely faithful to the core tone of blood and violence in the original work, striving to recreate the oppressive feeling of the hunters fighting against fear in despair.
Cross-industry production team: Well-known game YouTubers join the ranks of producers
In terms of the production team, this Bloodborne animated film will be co-produced by PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation.
Most notably, Seán McLoughlin (known online as "Jacksepticeye"), a famous gaming YouTuber, is also listed as one of the co-producers. Jacksepticeye is a huge Bloodborne fan, and his gameplay videos recorded on his channel have accumulated tens of millions of views.
By choosing Sainn McLaughlin as producer, Sony may be leveraging his significant social influence as a game creator to ensure that the adaptation accurately meets the expectations of core players.
The project appears to be in a very early stage of development, with Variety not yet reporting a definite release date or voice cast.
Behind the protracted development of game remakes: Hidetaka Miyazaki's "protective instincts"?
Interestingly, this news about the animated film stands in stark contrast to recent rumors about the remake of the game itself being hindered.
According to a Bloomberg report in February of this year, Bluepoint Games, which has worked on many excellent PlayStation remakes, originally intended to take over the development of a remake of Bloodborne for modern consoles, but the plan was ultimately "intercepted" by FromSoftware.
The report indicates that producer Hidetaka Miyazaki originally hoped to personally oversee the remake, but due to the studio's current busy schedule (possibly working on the sequel to "The Ring of Elden" or other new projects), he stated in an interview that he "did not want anyone else to touch it."
