The UK Competition and Markets Authority announced it would investigate Amazon's $40 billion investment in artificial intelligence startup Anthropic.Investigation, in order to clarify whether it affects market competition.
The relevant investigation is expected to reach a conclusion in the next 40 working days, at which time it will be determined whether Amazon's investment can be considered a "merger and acquisition" to some extent.
However, Amazon stated that this investment did not involve any exchange of interests, nor did Amazon gain any control over Anthropic, so there were no competition issues involved. It also emphasized that it did not meet the review threshold of the UK Competition and Markets Authority.
Anthropic also denied this, saying that Amazon does not hold any seat on its board of directors, nor does it serve as a board observer. It emphasized that it will cooperate with the UK Competition and Markets Authority to explain the details of Amazon's investment.
Prior to this, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission also investigated the investment relationship between Microsoft and OpenAI, as well as the investment and cooperation relationship between Amazon, Google and Anthropic earlier this year.Investigation, and the UK Competition and Markets Authority also investigated whether the partnership between Microsoft and Open AI involved any impact on market competition at the end of last year.
