During his second term, US President Trump continued to promote government digital reforms. In the latest executive order signed earlier, he announced the establishment of aA new unit called the National Design StudioAirbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia will serve as Chief Design Officer, leading the overall operations of the unit.
DOGE's Continuation and Transformation
Reuters news report stated, this newly established design studio is regarded asDOGE A "lite version" of the Department of Government Efficiency.
DOGE, previously led by Elon Musk, focused on cutting government redundancies and modernizing IT systems, sparking controversy that led to the layoffs of hundreds of thousands of federal employees and the dismantling of some agencies. However, after Musk stepped down as an advisor, DOGE's operations gradually slowed.
While the newly established design studio continues the reform philosophy, unlike DOGE's aggressive approach of "cutting redundancies and reducing expenses," it will focus more on "design uniformity" and "user experience." For example, it will improve the visual design and interactive processes of government service websites, and help various departments reduce costs caused by duplicate development.
Airbnb founder leads digital experience
Joe Gebbia, the Chief Design Officer of the National Design Studio, previously emphasized simplicity, intuitiveness, and user-friendliness when promoting the platform's design experience at Airbnb. It is speculated that his appointment will bring the US government's digital service interfaces closer to the user interface of commercial products, such as a unified login process, responsive design, and clearer online operation procedures.
According to the executive order, the National Design Studio will operate for three years and will automatically close before Trump leaves office. In addition to Joe Gebbia, the unit will have an administrative manager who will report directly to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles to ensure the organization can promote reforms within the limited time frame.
Challenges and Observations
For the Trump administration, this is an attempt to improve the user experience of long-standing U.S. government digital services through a design-driven approach. However, many challenges remain, such as:
• Bureaucratic resistance:There are hundreds of federal agencies, each with independent IT teams and system architectures, and the standardization process will face huge coordination costs.
• Three-year deadline pressure:Whether the results of the reform can be implemented in a short period of time remains to be seen.
• Overlapping with DOGE's positioning:The White House has not yet responded clearly to whether DOGE will continue to exist or be completely replaced by the design studio.
However, judging from Joe Gebbia's role, at least in terms of the "user interface" of digital services, the public will have the opportunity to see government websites with clearer interfaces and smoother interactions. This also means that the Trump administration is trying to incorporate "design" and "experience" thinking in addition to "efficiency," bringing new attempts to federal digital governance.
