Xbox recently announced that it will release a remastered version of the game, Halo: Campaign Evolved. The game will recreate the classic campaign of the original Halo: Campaign Evolved using Unreal Engine 5. It is expected to be released on Xbox Series X/S and PC in 2026, and will debut on the PlayStation 5 platform.
Faithful to the original and modernized, with three new prequel missions
According to the official description, Halo: Combat Evolved will be a "faithful and modernized remake" of the original campaign. Besides comprehensive visual and cinematic updates and refined controls, it will also feature three all-new prequel missions, focusing on the experiences of Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson prior to the events of the original.
In addition, the remastered version will also include new weapons, vehicles, and enemies, and for console players, the important two-player split-screen cooperative mode will also return. At the same time, this game will support cross-platform connection function, allowing Xbox, PC, and even PlayStation 5 players to participate in up to four-player online cooperative campaigns.
Halo Studios turns to UE5 development, adjusts levels to guide new players
It is worth noting that "Halo: Combat Evolved" is the first work confirmed to be built with Unreal Engine 5 after Halo Studios (renamed and reorganized from 343 Industries in 2024) announced that it would shift its development focus to the Unreal Engine game engine.
In addition to the innovations in graphics and controls, the official also mentioned that some of the impressive mission levels in the original work will be "fine-tuned" to make it easier for new players who are first exposed to the world view of "Halo" to get started and integrate into the plot.
"We wanted to begin where it all began—with the original campaign that defined Halo," producer Damon Conn said in a blog post announcing the game. "Starting here means people who haven't played the game before can understand the story from the very beginning, and it also helps us chart the direction for future Halo stories."
