During the Xbox "Developer Direct '26" livestream event held early this morning (January 23), Microsoft not only unveiled the racing blockbuster "Forza Horizon 6," but also revealed news that brought tears to the eyes of veteran gamers—the long-awaited reboot of the legendary RPG series "Fable" is confirmed for release in the fall of 2026.
This title, also developed by Playground Games, the ace studio behind the Forza Horizon series, will not only bring a brand-new Albion adventure, but more excitingly, the official confirmation is that the game will cross over from the Xbox ecosystem and be released simultaneously on the PlayStation 5 platform.
Unbound by its predecessors, it emphasizes "fairy tale" rather than epic.
Although titled "Fable," this game is positioned as a completely new beginning for the series. The development team chose not to be bound by the timeline or characters of the old trilogy, but instead to rebuild Albion in a style unique to Playground Games.
The game continues the series' unique "British humor" and sentimentality, emphasizing that it is a "Fairy Tale" rather than a serious and grand "High Fantasy" story. Players will experience the story from childhood, starting in the small village of Briar Hill. After a mysterious stranger uses magic to turn the entire village (including the protagonist's grandmother) to stone one day, players embark on a journey to break the curse.
Absolute freedom: There are no class or social barriers; you can get married if you want.
Playground Games brings its expertise in open-world design to the RPG genre. The game emphasizes complete freedom; after leaving the initial village, players can go anywhere on the map without any "level gating" restrictions.
The game's difficulty and progress will be dynamically adjusted based on the player's exploration. Although the main storyline has the goal of saving the grandmother, there is no pressing time pressure. You can stop at any time, go to other towns to work, settle down, or even get married and live an ordinary life.
Battle system "Style Weaving" and a brand new reputation mechanism
In terms of combat, this game employs a system called "Style-weaving," emphasizing the smooth switching between melee (strength), ranged (skill), and magic (willpower). Players can seamlessly unleash fireballs while swinging their swords, flexibly dealing with groups of mixed enemies.
The most interesting change is in the morality system. The new game no longer has the traditional "good and evil values," but instead introduces a more realistic "reputation and witness" mechanism. There is no absolute good or evil; everything depends on "whether or not you are seen."
For example, players must "kick a chicken" in front of an NPC to be given the title of "Chicken Kicker." The game will feature over 1000 NPCs with independent routines and personalities, who will generate different subjective opinions based on the player's actions.
