The specification was created by Pixar Animation Studios and was joined by NVIDIA, Apple, Adobe and other industry players.OpenUSD AllianceEarlier at the SIGGRAPH 2023 event, it announced its future development blueprint and that 12 companies including Epic Games, IKEA, Meta, and Unity would join as alliance members.
The OpenUSD Alliance will strengthen the interoperability of OpenUSD (Open Universal Scenario Description) data across different scenarios and establish it as an international cross-industry standard. This will facilitate the integration of 3D application workflows across different software and platforms, while also reducing the time lost in converting 3D content across platforms and preventing conversion errors.
In its future development plan, the OpenUSD Alliance will define the standards for creating 3D material content and maintain consistent compatibility in subsequent iterative updates. It is expected that the core standards will be completed by 2025.
The 12 new members added this time include Cesium, Chaos, Epic Games, Foundry, Hexagon, IKEA, Lowe's, Meta, OTOY, SideFX, Spatial and Unity, and will continue to attract more industry players to join in the future.
In addition, the OpenUSD Alliance also announced a partnership with the non-profit organization Khronos Group, which will enable OpenUSD to be compatible and interoperable with the gITF format promoted by the Khronos Group, thereby promoting the development of a wider range of 3D content industry applications.
