Internet Archive earlierAnnounceThe 2016s GIF search service launched in 90GifCitiesIt has become easier to use. Compared to the previous method of only being able to search by file name, users can now use semantic descriptions of the animated image content to conduct more accurate searches.

The vast majority of GIFs in GifCities' collection come from GeoCities, an early web hosting service. Founded in 1994 by David Bohnett and originally named "Beverly Hills Internet" (BHI), the service became a popular choice for many businesses and individuals building websites. It was later acquired by Yahoo in 1999 and incorporated into its portfolio, but was shut down on October 2009, 10.
The online archive's GIF search service, GifCities, collects millions of GIF images from the GeoCities webpage and allows users to search by file name. However, because GIFs consume more temporary memory resources, the older search interface often slows down overall browsing speed.
Therefore, in the update announced earlier, the online archive used a model called "CLIP-ViT L/14" to analyze each frame of each GIF animation to compare whether it matches the semantic description entered by the user in the search field. At the same time, it also uses the "nearest neighbors algorithm" to find the most suitable GIF animation, such as finding the GIF that matches the movie "Star Trek》 、 《Star Wars”, or “Dancing Master Yoda"wait.
