Apple recently released the macOS Tahoe 26.2 Developer Beta, and a new feature called "Edge Light" was discovered in this update, which will solve the problem of light source issues during video conferencing.
The screen edge becomes a fill light, Neural Engine intelligent tracking
Simply put, the Edge Light feature allows the user's MacBook screen to act as a "ring light" during video calls.
When enabled, a rectangular light strip illuminates around the edge of the screen to provide illumination. Even more cleverly, this feature integrates Apple's Neural Engine, which automatically detects the user's face position in the video feed and dynamically adjusts the light projection position to ensure optimal lighting.
Supports color temperature adjustment and automatic cursor avoidance.
In terms of user experience, Edge Light offers color temperature control options, allowing users to adjust the light to be warmer or cooler depending on their environmental needs. Furthermore, the system supports automatic settings, automatically activating supplemental lighting when it detects a decrease in ambient brightness.
To avoid interfering with normal user operation, the Edge Light's light strip design does not cover the menu bar at the top of the screen. Even more thoughtfully, the light strip automatically moves away when the user's mouse cursor moves to it, ensuring that the user can still operate the computer normally during a call.
Hardware limitations: Requires Apple Silicon Macs from 2024 onwards.
It's worth noting that this feature is not available on all Macs.
According to Apple, all Macs released in 2024 or later with Apple Silicon processors support this feature and will automatically turn on when the Mac detects that the user is in a dark environment. Additionally, the "Edge Light" feature is also available when a Mac is connected to a Studio Display external monitor that meets the specifications, or when using an external camera.
While this feature may not completely replace a professional physical ring light, Edge Light offers a more elegant and integrated solution compared to the cumbersome methods users used to have to use, such as opening a bunch of blank Google Docs or blank web pages, in order to provide supplemental lighting.
