Apple's restrictions on security groundsMini BeeperA group of U.S. senators and congressmen have asked the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate Apple's violation of market monopoly by allowing Android phones to access iMessage messages.
A team including Senators Amy Klobuchar and Mike Lee, and Representatives Jerry Nadler and Ken Buck believes that Apple's restrictions on Beeper Mini involve potential market monopoly, and therefore hopes that the US Department of Justice will intervene in the investigation.
Senator Elizabeth Warren further questioned why Apple, since it criticized Android's text messaging system as insecure, would restrict third-party apps that allow Android phones to use the iMessage service. She therefore suspected that Apple was doing this to protect its own interests.
Senator @amyklobuchar + @SenMikeLee + @RepJerryNadler @RepKenBuck sent this to DOJ regarding ongoing fight betwn Beeper Mini vs Apple “to investigate whether this potentially anticompetitive conduct by Apple violated antitrust laws.” I'll have the full story on @CBSMornings tmrw pic.twitter.com/pj6ef432TK

Green bubble texts are less secure. So why would Apple block a new app allowing Android users to chat with iPhone users on iMessage? Big Tech executives are protecting profits by squashing competitors.
Chatting between different platforms should be easy and secure. https://t.co/fHAS5ckaEA

In their appeal to the Department of Justice, the consortium emphasized that interoperability and interconnection have always been the key to competition and consumer choice in communications services. If companies eliminate additional choices at the early stages of competition, it means that consumers cannot benefit from competitive choices. Therefore, they hope that the Department of Justice will intervene in the investigation to clarify whether Apple's practice of blocking Beeper Mini violates market monopoly.
However, Apple may argue that it will add support for the RCS format text messaging system in 2024, which means that the iPhone will be able to send the same RCS text messages as Android phones, thereby demonstrating that it does not constitute a market monopoly.
As for Beeper Mini, a third-party service that allowed Android devices to send and receive iMessage messages, which was previously blocked by Apple on security grounds, it was announced earlier that its service has been "resurrected" as long as users log in with their Apple ID.
