Samsung officially unveiled the new generation of foldable screen mobile phone Galaxy Z Fold2023 at Unpacked 5, emphasizing the enhancement of the existing design and improving the overall durability. The weight is reduced from 263 grams of the previous generation model to 253 grams, and the hinge is replaced with a more robust Flex dual-track hinge design. The thickness after folding is reduced by 2.4mm compared to the previous generation model, and it is also flatter. The inner foldable glass is 25% more durable than the previous generation model.
Samsung didn't specify the number of parts used in its dual-track Flex hinge design, but it maintained its durability of up to 20 folds. As for other brands claiming 40 folds, Samsung explained that this is due to differences in laboratory testing and verification methods. However, Samsung believes that 20 folds, repeated approximately 100 times per day, should provide at least five years of user experience.
Although the overall design is similar to the previous generation model, Samsung emphasized that the Galaxy Z Fold5 uses a new back-side damping design to achieve a shock-absorbing effect while further reducing the impact of external pressure during daily use, allowing the phone to have more adequate protection.
The exterior maintains a 120-inch Dynamic AMOLED 6.2X display supporting up to 2Hz refresh rates, while the interior features a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display, also supporting up to 120Hz refresh rates. The interior also features a new Under-Display Camera 2.0 (UDC 2.0) design. The brightness of both the interior and exterior screens has been increased from 1000nits on the previous generation to 1200nits, with peak brightness reaching 1750nits.
In terms of hardware specifications, the Galaxy Z Fold5 also uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor customized for Samsung's needs, equipped with 12GB of memory and storage capacities of 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. The battery capacity is 4400mAh, adopts a dual-battery architecture, and supports fast charging. The body is built with IPX8 level waterproof and dustproof.
Like its previous models, Samsung also emphasized that many components of the Galaxy Z Fold5 are made of recycled materials such as discarded fishing nets, pre-consumer recycled aluminum, PET bottles, buckets and pre-consumer recycled glass. It even further increased the proportion of recycled materials used, increasing it to 15 compared to the previous generation, an overall increase of more than 2 times.
In addition, the new S Pen is 27% smaller than the previous generation, and can even fit neatly into the storage slot on the back cover of the new protective case. It also adds the ability to minimize web pages and quickly switch apps through a floating preview, and can even move windows by long pressing and dragging.
As for the operating experience when the screen is folded, in Flex mode, users can use the lower screen as a touchpad to operate the phone. At the same time, a 3-finger touch is added to return to the previous page, and a 4-finger touch is added to quickly call the App menu. In addition, a two-hand touch function is added. When you tap a specific image with your left hand, you can open Samsung Notes by touching with your right hand, and then put the specific image behind it into the note field.
