At Google I/O 2022, Google announced that it would begin providing a navigation route planning function in the United States and Canada in the form of minimal carbon emissions, thereby reducing carbon emissions of vehicles on the road and also reducing fuel consumption.AnnounceBringing more carbon reduction capabilities to nearly 40 countries across Europe.
Google said that after the feature was expanded to North America in the first half of this year, it has reduced carbon emissions by more than 50 tons, which is equivalent to reducing carbon emissions from 10 traditional fuel vehicles on the road. This has exceeded more than half of the original target. Therefore, it is expected that the launch of this feature in more countries and regions in Europe will enable the carbon reduction target to be achieved faster.
The function is also available in Europe, allowing users to choose to plan a navigation route that reaches the destination fastest, or set it according to the power source of the vehicle type to plan the most energy-efficient navigation route, so that the vehicle can reach the destination with the least fuel and electricity consumption.
Even in the new version of the service, users can compare the time required for the vehicle to reach the destination or the estimated fuel consumption when using different power sources.
Currently, this feature has been implemented in the United States in cooperation with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy, and is also being integrated with the European Environment Agency to allow users to more conveniently plan energy-saving and environmentally friendly navigation routes through Google Maps.
