Currently part of MicrosoftGitHub, earlier announced that CEO Thomas Domke will step down by the end of 2025 and return to entrepreneurial development. After Thomas Domke's departure, GitHub will be incorporated into the CoreAI department established by Microsoft in early January this year.
GitHub Product Chief Mario Rodriguez said that even if GitHub is incorporated into Microsoft's CoreAI department, its essence and future development direction will not change.
After nearly four years as CEO, I'm leaving GitHub to become a startup founder again.
With more than 1B repos and forks, 150M+ developers, and Copilot continuing to lead the most thriving market in AI with 20M users and counting, GitHub has never been stronger than it is today.…

Microsoft announced the acquisition of GitHub in 2018. Thomas Domke, who was the product chief at the time, was later promoted to CEO of GitHub. During his tenure, he promoted the application and development of Copilot and AI technology. At the same time, the number of GitHub data repositories and branches exceeded 10 billion, the developer community has accumulated to more than 1.5 million people, and the number of AI-related projects has more than doubled in the past year.
Among them, "GitHub Actions" has an execution time of up to 30 billion minutes per month, with an annual growth rate of 64%, while "GitHub Advanced Security" uses AI to shorten the average vulnerability repair time by 60% and increase the repair speed by 3 times.
In terms of product strategy, GitHub has been promoting a diversified AI model strategy in recent years, and has collaborated with industry players such as Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI to provide Copilot with "multi-model" capabilities. At the same time, it has launched a VS Code Agent mode that supports synchronous collaboration, as well as a native asynchronous coding agent.
Thomas Domke believes that Copilot is "the biggest change to software development since the invention of the PC."
Thomas Domke also foresees the future as the "era of developer AI," enabling people, regardless of their native language or programming background, to bring their creative ideas to life through AI. He also foresees a future where "a billion developers and billions of AI agents" jointly drive innovation, and expressed his gratitude to the GitHub team and the global community (Hubbers).
With GitHub's integration into the CoreAI division, GitHub's future product offerings are bound to be closely integrated with Microsoft's AI ecosystem. This will provide developers who rely on GitHub with more powerful AI tools and align the platform's strategy more closely with Microsoft's AI strategy.
