As we enter 2026, rumors of consolidation in the AI market show no signs of abating. (Source: The Information website)Obtaining informationOpenAI is reportedly planning to acquire the social image platform Pinterest this year. If this rumor comes true, it will be the largest acquisition in OpenAI's history.
Why Pinterest? A dual consideration of image library and monetization capabilities.
The report analyzes that OpenAI's interest in Pinterest stems primarily from three key assets: a massive image database, existing advertising infrastructure, and established merchant partnerships.
Pinterest is essentially a "digital scrapbook," where users collect hundreds of millions of images with tags, descriptions, and links. For OpenAI, which has DALL-E (image generation) and Sora (video generation), this is undoubtedly a high-quality "gold mine" for training multimodal AI models.
Furthermore, Pinterest's features are highly complementary to OpenAI's generative tools, helping OpenAI quickly address its shortcomings in online shopping and advertising, thus giving it more confidence to compete fully with rivals like Google.
With a market capitalization of $175 billion, the founder holds key voting rights.
Pinterest's stock price is currently hovering around $25 (similar to its price at the beginning of 2023), and the company's market capitalization is approximately $175 billion.
Pinterest co-founders Ben Silbermann and Paul Sciarra still retain approximately two-thirds of the company's voting shares. Since Ben Silbermann stepped down as CEO in mid-2022 and is no longer involved in day-to-day operations, it is speculated that this may have increased his desire to sell the company.
Although Pinterest has recently been actively incorporating AI features such as conversational search in an attempt to compete with ChatGPT, analysts believe that for OpenAI, directly "acquiring" it is more strategically valuable than "competing".
Analysis: Data is the new oil; monetization is the key.
The author believes this rumor is not unfounded. Looking back over the past two years, OpenAI has reached licensing agreements with platforms like Reddit to obtain training data. Pinterest possesses structured image data (images + text descriptions + user intent), which is crucial for OpenAI to train its next-generation AI to understand the real world.
On the other hand, while OpenAI currently leads in technology, its business model still heavily relies on subscription models and API access fees. Acquiring Pinterest would allow it to directly inherit Pinterest's mature affiliate and advertising systems, convert ChatGPT's massive traffic into actual e-commerce revenue, and demonstrate to investors that AI can be very profitable.
