ContinuePreviously worked with Pacific Gas and Electric Company in the United StatesBy paying eligible Powerwall users, Tesla allows reverse power supply to be dispatched to locations where electricity is needed when power outages are more frequent. Tesla has also recently cooperated with local energy companies in Miyako Island, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, to allow users who install and use Powerwall energy storage devices locally to reversely transmit stored electricity back to the grid in emergencies such as natural disasters.
Tesla's current partner in providing virtual grid services on Miyakojima Island is Miyakojima Mirai Energy, which provides free installation of solar panels and Powerwall storage devices. Over 300 sets have been installed to date.
Miyakojima is often affected by typhoons, which can cause power outages in homes. By installing Powerwall storage devices, stable power supply can be ensured for homes during typhoons.
In collaboration with Miyakojima Future Energy, Tesla expects to increase the number of installations to 400 by the end of this year and to 2023 by the end of 600. It also plans to expand to other areas of Okinawa Prefecture, Japan in 2024, and aims to achieve a 2025% renewable energy self-sufficiency rate for the entire island by 49.
