STMicroelectronics partners with Israeli software startup Mobile Physics to enable mobile phones to function as air quality monitors

STMicroelectronics has partnered with Mobile Physics, an Israeli software startup founded in 2019, to develop an application called EnviroMeter. This application uses a smartphone's built-in optical sensor to measure indoor and ambient air quality, allowing the phone to function as a personal air quality monitor and smoke detector using a ToF (Time-of-Flight) optical sensor. Developed specifically for STMicroelectronics' multi-zone ranging sensor, it measures particulate matter in the surrounding air. Mobile Physics' EnviroMeter application offers accuracy comparable to dedicated air quality monitors, serving as a portable personal environmental monitor and smoke detector to protect health and enhance fire safety. Utilizing STMicroelectronics' low-power process technology, the solution can be set to an "always-on" long-term operating mode, allowing the phone to continuously monitor air quality and smoke with minimal impact on battery life. At last year's Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit in Hawaii, STMicroelectronics showcased this solution using the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 computing platform, demonstrating air quality measurement and smoke detection capabilities using STMicroelectronics' VL53L8 ToF sensor. The air quality monitoring solution, co-developed by the two companies, includes additional monitoring data for temperature, wind speed, precipitation, humidity, light intensity, UV radiation, and noise within the EnviroMeter software development kit. It also enables the detection of particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers and operates using only a standard ToF sensor and Mobile Physics software.

The Snapdragon 100s Gen 8 computing platform, capable of handling 3 billion AI model parameters and offering faster computational efficiency, has been unveiled.

The Snapdragon 100s Gen 8 computing platform, capable of handling 3 billion AI model parameters and offering faster computational efficiency, has been unveiled.

Following the announcement of the flagship mobile computing platform Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 last October, Qualcomm unsurprisingly launched the new Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 computing platform before its annual technology conference this year. Xiaomi will be the first to launch a device equipped with Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, and other mobile phone brands including iQOO and realme will also release devices using this platform. Previously, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 could handle computing scales of 13 billion and 2 billion parameters, and up to 10 billion parameters. Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 can also handle 10 billion parameters, meaning it can drive larger-scale artificial intelligence models on mobile devices. This allows for the use of automatically generated AI-driven virtual assistant services, more diverse image and video generation tools, and enables camera functions to process more detailed information through AI technology, such as significantly enhancing the brightness of low-light images. In gaming, it further enhances the performance of AAA games and improves the visual experience through real-time ray tracing in hardware processing. Audio processing is also significantly improved thanks to Snapdragon Sound technology. For connectivity, it integrates the Snapdragon X70 5G modem and the Qualcomm FastConnect 7800 system, enabling faster 5G and Wi-Fi 7 connections. Other features include enhanced wireless connectivity through Snapdragon Seamless Experience and robust data security with Snapdragon Secure. Overall, the Snapdragon 8s Gen...
