DJI is expected to launch a new action camera, the OSMO Action, in the near future to challenge GoPro's market share.

After announcing the OSMO Pocket, a convenient 3-axis stabilized camera, at the end of last year, DJI clearly plans to further extend its reach into the action camera market, primarily dominated by GoPro. The action camera, expected to be called the OSMO Action, is likely to be unveiled soon. In terms of design, the OSMO Action will resemble the GoPro HERO, but will feature LCD screens on the front and back for easier handling. It will also include basic waterproofing, providing some environmental protection without the need for a separate waterproof case. This is expected to address a shortcoming of the GoPro and potentially attract users with live streaming or short video shooting needs. The specifications of the OSMO Action are currently rumored to be roughly as follows: It features dual 1/2.3-inch LCD screens (front and rear), a 12-megapixel sensor (Sony IMX377), an Ambarella H2 image processor, a 145° shooting angle, an f/2.8 aperture, and a shutter speed between 1/8000-120s. It supports 4K@60fps, 1080P@120fps, 8x slow-motion video recording, HDR, and automatic time-lapse photography. It supports single shot, continuous shooting, countdown shooting, multi-shot burst shooting, and interval shooting. It also has a built-in digital stabilization system. However, the exact release date of the DJI OSMO Action is still uncertain, but it is estimated that corresponding accessories will be released to provide users with more diverse shooting application modes.

Hands-on: While the Osmo Pocket isn't a professional camera, it's a lightweight, simple, and fun three-axis photography tool.

Hands-on: While the Osmo Pocket isn't a professional camera, it's a lightweight, simple, and fun three-axis photography tool.

The Osmo Pocket, officially unveiled at the end of November this year, is DJI's first mini handheld shooting device designed for casual shooting. Although only palm-sized, it truly utilizes DJI's three-axis stabilized camera design used in drones, allowing users to easily shoot stabilized videos, panoramic images, and even quickly switch to stabilized selfies. During my recent trip to Hawaii, I also used the Osmo Pocket to actually shoot video and experience the recording capabilities of this mini handheld device. Given that DJI has previously released several handheld shooting devices, and even three-axis stabilizers that allow users to directly fix their phones for shooting, why release this mini-designed Osmo Pocket? The reason is simple: convenience. Previously released Osmo series handheld shooting devices, or three-axis stabilizers that can fix phones for shooting, always take up considerable space and are not very convenient to carry. The Osmo Pocket, with its palm-sized design, can be quickly stored in a jacket or pants pocket, and its quick-start capability makes it easily meet the needs of impromptu shooting. DJI's newly launched mini 3-axis stabilizer is only palm-sized, yet it features a 12-megapixel camera with a 1/2.3-inch sensor and an f/2.0 aperture lens, capable of handling most shooting needs. With a 100Mbps data transfer rate, it supports recording video at up to 4K@60fps, and at 4K@30fps, allowing for up to two hours of continuous recording. The main physical buttons on the device include a long press for power on/off, a single press for function options, and a dedicated recording button. Other controls are provided via a 1-inch touchscreen, allowing for swiping and tapping. The screen also provides real-time monitoring during recording. The touchscreen on the device can be used to preview the captured content and also features an intuitive interface for gesture control. As for drawbacks, the Osmo Pocket itself doesn't support zoom shooting; this can only be achieved through hand or foot movements. However, it does offer several practical shooting functions, including automatic object recognition and tracking, automatic eye tracking in automatic mode, time-lapse video, slow motion, and a panoramic shooting mode that can capture a 180-degree field of view and stitch together 9 photos. While the Osmo Pocket can record clear audio, it's recommended to connect an external microphone for better sound quality. However, for everyday recording, the built-in microphone provides sufficient recording quality. The actual box size of the Osmo Pocket is roughly the same as that of a typical blower accessory. The warranty and instruction manual are cleverly concealed inside the outer packaging. The actual contents include a lanyard, cable, and adapters. The complete set of cables and accessories includes a USB-C cable and adapters for Lightning and USB-C connectivity. The Osmo Pocket's protective cover allows connection to a mobile phone for more precise shooting. In terms of shooting settings, functions such as lens return calibration, tilt axis control switching, and setting 50Hz or 60Hz anti-flicker mode can generally be configured directly on the Osmo Pocket. During shooting, the lens can be controlled to return to the center position, switch shooting direction, and adjust the shooting direction follow mode. The lens follow speed can also be adjusted at any time, providing users with considerable operational flexibility. However, for more precise shooting operations, connection to a mobile phone is required. ...
