Atari launches Intellivision Spirit retro console, recreating classic gaming experiences from the 1980s

As the retro gaming trend continues to surge, Atari has officially announced the Intellivision Spirit game console. This product is a modern reimagining of the classic 1980s Intellivision console, and is expected to ship on December 5th, priced at $150. The new console's design faithfully recreates the original 1980s aesthetic, evoking nostalgia among veteran gamers. Technically, the Intellivision Spirit is a completely modern product, equipped with a wireless controller and HDMI TV connectivity – features lacking in the original Intellivision 40 years ago. Like the NES Classic (US version of the Famicom) and Atari 2600+, the Intellivision Spirit comes pre-loaded with 45 classic games. The game library particularly emphasizes sports and strategy genres, which were among the most popular game types for the original Intellivision console, including the puzzle game *Boulder Dash* and *Space Armada*, a tribute to *Space Invaders*. Notably, each game comes with a dedicated console cover that can be attached to the game controller to display the corresponding control scheme, recreating the original gaming experience. The industry transformation of former rivals into one family is particularly noteworthy. Intellivision was Atari's biggest competitor in the 1980s, a rivalry similar to the later Nintendo-SEGA rivalry. With Atari's formal acquisition of Intellivision last year, this decades-long competition officially came to an end. A significant departure from its predecessor is the Intellivision Spirit, which is confirmed to begin shipping on December 5th. This contrasts sharply with Intellivision's Amico console, which had been in development for many years but never achieved a successful launch, ensuring consumers won't face a situation of "hearing the stairs but not actually seeing them." With the retro gaming market continuing to heat up, Atari's reinterpretation of a former competitor's classic product demonstrates its proactive approach to the nostalgia gaming market, providing veteran gamers with a new option to relive classic gaming experiences.
