Founded by former Google executives Hugo Barra and David Singleton, /dev/agents will create an AI-assisted operating system.

Hugo Barra, former Google VP who previously led the Android business and later worked at Xiaomi and Meta, co-founded "/dev/agents," an AI-assisted operating system startup, in October of this year with David Singleton, former Google VP of Engineering and former CTO of Stripe. The startup has already secured $56 million in funding. David Singleton serves as CEO of "/dev/agents," while Hugo Barra is responsible for product development. The CTO position is held by Ficus Kirkpatrick, former Google Engineering Director and former VP of AR/VR at Facebook, and interface design is handled by Nicholas Jitkoff, who has worked at Google, Dropbox, Meta, and Figma. According to the description, "/dev/agents" is building a cloud-based, cross-platform operating system that utilizes AI-driven assistant services. The first version of the operating system is expected to launch between early and mid-2025. "/dev/agents" is expected to follow the licensing model of the Android operating system, potentially generating revenue through app sales or offering access via subscription. It aims to attract users by leveraging the flexibility of third-party operating systems. The team members of "/dev/agents" almost all have prior experience at companies like Google and Meta, and possess considerable understanding of the operating system ecosystem. This may explain why they were able to secure $56 million in early funding from investors including Alphabet's independent venture capital firm CapitalG and Index Ventures, increasing the company's valuation to $500 million.

Hugo Barra, who left Google for Xiaomi and then joined Facebook, is leaving

After working at Google, Xiaomi, and Facebook, Hugo Barra turned to healthcare startups.

Hugo Barra, who previously led the Android team at Google, then served as head of global marketing at Xiaomi, and later led the VR/AR team at Facebook, announced his departure in mid-May of this year. He has now confirmed that he has joined the US medical startup Detect as CEO. Detect was founded in Guilford, Connecticut in 2017 by American scientist and entrepreneur Dr. Jonathan Marc Rothberg. Prior to this, Dr. Rothberg founded Butterfly Network, known for creating ultrasound scanning devices that connect to iPhones for portable use. Detect's main business is currently providing the "Detect Covid-19 Test," a rapid COVID-19 testing tool approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Users can easily test for infection at home by purchasing it online. Each test kit sells for $49 and boasts a 50-fold higher accuracy rate, allowing users to quickly confirm their COVID-19 infection. It even claims to detect infection with the Omicron variant. Detect has secured $110 million in funding, including $8.1 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), to expand production of rapid COVID-19 testing tools. While joining Detect as CEO seems significantly different from his previous roles, Hugo Barra emphasizes that Detect's product strategy is similar to that of smartphones: to make medical devices more accessible and affordable for a wider range of people, ensuring access to healthcare is not solely dependent on high prices. ▲Hugo Barra, now CEO of Detect, after stints at Google, Xiaomi, and Facebook.

Hugo Barra, who moved from Google to Xiaomi and then from Xiaomi to Facebook as head of virtual reality, recently announced that he will be responsible for the development of the global augmented reality and virtual reality partner ecosystem. Erick Tseng, Facebook's Director of Product Management, will succeed Barra as head of the Oculus VR team. Hugo Barra, who joined Xiaomi as Global Vice President in August 2013 and further assisted in promoting Xiaomi's development in the global market, even showcasing several new Xiaomi products at CES 2017, has confirmed his departure from Xiaomi to return to Silicon Valley in the United States. According to his personal Facebook page, he will officially leave Xiaomi in February, after the Chinese New Year, to return to his familiar Silicon Valley. However, he has not yet specified his future plans, only stating that he needs some personal time to prepare before starting his new career. His previous responsibilities will be taken over by Xiaomi Senior Vice President Wang Xiang, who will continue to oversee Xiaomi's international business development. Hugo Barra previously worked at Nuance's digital voice technology department before joining Google in 2008 as Vice President of Product Management, responsible for Android product development. During his final years at Google, Hugo Barra reportedly left the company due to relationship issues and joined Xiaomi in August 2013, where he was responsible for overseas business development and used the nickname "Tiger Brother" to enhance his connection with Xiaomi fans. Regarding his departure from Xiaomi, Hugo Barra explained that he felt he had completed his phase of work and it was time to "go home." He also stated that his time at Xiaomi was the biggest challenge and adventure of his career. While he appreciated the ability and passion he demonstrated in leading the team, leaving Xiaomi was inevitably saddening. However, considering the long hours and high-pressure work environment, he felt he had to consider his health before making the decision. This departure, coupled with recent rumors of Android's creator Andy Rubin returning to the mobile phone market, has sparked considerable speculation.
