Elwood Edwards, the voice of AOL's classic "You've got mail!" line, has passed away.

AOL (America Online), an American internet company, provided email services in the 90s and 2000s. When users received new emails, they would hear the signature greeting, "You've got mail!" The original voice behind this greeting, Elwood Edwards, recently passed away at the age of 74. Reports indicate that Elwood Edwards died the day before his 75th birthday. The reason for recording the signature greeting "You've got mail!" stemmed from an incident when Elwood Edwards' wife, Karen Edwards, worked at AOL when it was still known as Quantum Computer Services. Upon learning of the company's plan to record voices for its email service, she recommended Elwood Edwards for the recording. He recorded the now-famous "You've got mail!" in their living room using a tape recorder. "You've got mail!" later became a popular internet slang term and an important element of internet culture at the time. It even inspired the classic film *You've Got Mail*, directed by Nora Ephron and starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Besides "You've got mail!", Elwood Edwards also recorded other phrases including "Welcome" and "File's done"...
