Perplexity launches its AI browser "Comet", creating a new battlefield for information portals and taking on Google head-on

After announcing the launch of its original web browser "Comet" in late February, Perplexity.ai recently announced the release of this browser. In addition to using its own search engine, it also features a smart assistant service called "Comet Assistant," taking the lead over OpenAI in the AI browser market competition and challenging the market share of Google Search and Chrome. Unlike the market practice of using AI tools as add-ons in traditional browsers, "Comet" is a completely new browser product designed from scratch with AI as its core architecture. The homepage defaults to Perplexity.ai's search interface, and AI automatic summarization is placed in a central position, allowing users to quickly obtain key information upon opening the browser, saving them the tedious process of constantly clicking links and filtering content. Another highlight of "Comet" is the smart assistant service called "Comet Assistant." This smart assistant service is not only an extension of search, but also allows users to instantly read web page content in the browser sidebar, quickly summarize key points of YouTube videos and social media posts, and even assist in managing emails, pagination, and scheduling, attempting to shift AI from "providing answers" to "directly assisting in completing tasks." However, "Comet" is currently only available to Max plan subscribers who pay $200 per month and a limited number of invited users, and is in an early testing phase. According to tests conducted by foreign media, while "Comet Assistant" can smoothly interpret most content, it still exhibits common AI "illusion" problems in complex tasks such as cross-platform collaboration and precise schedule planning, including misjudging needs and processing incorrect orders. This indicates that AI agent applications still have a technical hurdle to overcome before truly taking over complete workflows. On the other hand, for "Comet" to fully utilize its capabilities, it must obtain extensive user authorization beforehand, including access to Google accounts, viewing emails, calendars, and contact information. In an era where data privacy and information security are increasingly valued, this will inevitably become a psychological barrier to promotion. Convincing users to trust AI agent services will be a key challenge for Perplexity.ai in the future. For Perplexity.ai, "Comet" is not just a browser, but a new platform for "information entry," aiming to leverage its pre-defined tool status to grasp users' daily data flow and continuously optimize its AI models. According to data released by Perplexity.ai, as of May 2025, the platform had received a record 780 million search requests and continues to grow at a rate of 20% per month. If this search traffic can be successfully converted into Comet users, it may have the potential to become a new force to rival Google in the future.
