Qualcomm announces acquisition of UK chip design company Alphawave Semi for approximately US$24 billion, strengthening its data center presence

Qualcomm recently announced an agreement with UK chip design company Alphawave Semi to acquire all issued and upcoming ordinary shares of Alphawave Semi through its indirect wholly-owned subsidiary, Aqua Acquisition Sub LLC, for approximately $24 billion. Qualcomm stated that this transaction will accelerate its expansion into data centers and further strengthen its Oryon CPU and Hexagon NPU designs, while meeting the needs of data centers for customized processors. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon stated that Alphawave Semi's high-speed wired connectivity and computing technologies will complement Qualcomm's development of high-performance CPU and NPU core designs. Alphawave Semi President and CEO Tony Pialis also pointed out that this transaction will be a significant milestone for Alphawave Semi, creating greater value for its customers and allowing Qualcomm's customized processors to perfectly match data center workloads. The transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, and the merged team will work together to design data and drive the development of data center computing processors. However, this transaction still requires approval from specific regulatory bodies, as well as the consent of a majority of Alphawave Semi's investors and a ruling from the UK High Court regarding whether the acquisition constitutes market impact. The UK market believes this transaction will impact the development of the UK technology industry. Furthermore, Alphawave Semi was originally a key partner in Arm's comprehensive design ecosystem; if Qualcomm successfully acquires Alphawave Semi, it may also affect Arm's efforts to promote its ecosystem development. While Qualcomm announced its NVLink Fusion design collaboration with NVIDIA at Computex 2025 this year, which will combine Qualcomm CPUs and NVIDIA GPUs using NVIDIA's NVLink technology to form a data center acceleration architecture, this acquisition of Alphawave Semi and strengthening of its data center application strategy is clearly aimed at avoiding dependence on NVIDIA technology in this market.
