Swedish battery manufacturer NorthvoltAnnounce, is currently developing a lignin-based hard carbon material extracted from wood, which will be used as a material for manufacturing battery cells, making the battery a 100% recyclable product.
Northvolt was founded in 2015 by Peter Carlsson, a former Tesla executive. It was formerly known as SGF Energy until it was renamed Northvolt in 2017.
According to the company, this technology, developed in collaboration with Stora Enso, a pulp and paper producer headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, utilizes lignin-based hard carbon derived from recycled wood from Nordic forests as the core material for batteries. Lignin's inherently good natural binder and its easily recyclable properties allow it to be combined with 100% recyclable nickel, manganese, and cobalt to create more environmentally friendly battery products.
Northvolt calls this technology Lignode, and will use it to create recyclable batteries in the future. It has also obtained cooperation from European automakers such as Volvo, Volkswagen, and BMW.
