The Luvly O, a lightweight electric vehicle developed by a Swedish startup, is not only an electric vehicle, but also features a compact design. It's powered by clean electricity and doesn't take up too much urban space. Furthermore, the Luvly O boasts a modular design that increases its carrying capacity during single trips, thereby reducing overall carbon emissions.
Luvly CEO Håkan Lutz said that the design of "Luvly O" was based on IKEA furniture's flat-box transportation and storage methods. By modularizing vehicle parts and enabling them to be transported in a more efficient manner, carbon emissions during transportation can be reduced.
While Luvly has simplified the transportation of the Luvly O, it emphasizes that it will still be assembled in its factory, rather than being self-assembled at home, to avoid potential safety issues. The patented design, featuring modular components and flat-pack shipping, will also be licensed to other automakers in the future, enabling the creation of more efficient vehicles that can be shipped and assembled, thereby reducing carbon emissions from transportation.
The reason why the parts can be modularized and transported in a smaller flat box is mainly due to the "Luvly O" itself adopting an electric structural design. By reducing the traditional internal combustion engine, intake system and other designs, it can actually free up more interior space in the vehicle and significantly reduce the vehicle's size.
Therefore, the "Luvly O" has a load capacity of only 450 kilograms, which is about a quarter of the weight of a standard car. At the same time, its maximum speed can reach 90 kilometers per hour and its maximum driving distance can reach 100 kilometers. It is mainly designed for urban mobility, and its smaller body also makes it convenient to park in relatively small spaces in the city. It also has 267 liters of luggage carrying space, which is roughly sufficient for general urban mobility needs.
The vehicle's body utilizes a sandwich structure, utilizing two layers of styrofoam for impact absorption and an outer layer of composite materials like aluminum for protection. This reduces weight while still providing a degree of protection. While the protection may not be as good as traditional vehicles, it does provide some protection for low-speed commuting and shuttle use within cities. However, it inevitably creates the impression of a "four-wheeled vehicle with a simple protective shell."
The Luvly O also features mobile phone connectivity, allowing users to play music through the car's speakers, use navigation, and answer calls while driving. It can also be used to control the car's air conditioning and other functions, and to keep the car updated. This connectivity also suggests the possibility of Luvly O being used in future applications such as car-sharing services.
The battery itself is directly removable and can be charged using a normal indoor socket without the need for a special charger. Users also do not need to find a special charging station to recharge.
"Luvly O" is expected to go on sale in 2024, with a suggested retail price of around US$1.
